View CMAP Main Meeting - Scaling Systems: Architectures that Grow - Kendall Miller on Bing Maps Topic: Scaling Systems: Architectures that Grow

It's harder than ever to predict the load your application will need to handle in advance, so how do you design your architecture so you can afford to implement as you go and be ready for whatever comes your way.
It's easy to focus on optimizing each part of your application but your application architecture determines the options you have to make big leaps in scalability.
In this talk we'll cover practical patterns you can build today to meet the needs of rapid development while still creating systems that can scale up and out. Specific code examples will focus on .NET but the principles apply across many technologies. Real world systems will be discussed based on our experience helping customers around the world optimize their enterprise applications.

Presenter: Kendall Miller

Introduced commercially in 2009, Gibraltar is an application logging & monitoring platform that is currently used by customers around the world from individual consultants through Fortune 100 companies and governments.
Before starting Gibraltar Software, Kendall worked for multiple startups leading their technology development from beginning through profitability. In each case he's focused on translating enterprise-level performance and capabilities down to smaller companies.
Kendall has a B.S in Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Knock It Out with Knockout
- Geoff Snowman

Knockout is a JavaScript framework that makes developing client-side data manipulation code a snap. Knockout implements the Model-View-ViewModel pattern in the browser allowing you to data bind JavaScript objects to DOM elements quickly and easily. In this presentation, Geoff will show several example pages built using Knockout ranging from Hello, World to advanced data binding samples. He'll also talk about approaches for customizing Knockout data binding.

Geoff Snowman, better known as The Notorious D.O.R.K., rose to prominence during the East Coast – West Coast Code Reviews of the late 90s, when he was a member of the .NET posse. He attracted attention with a blend of object-oriented analysis and agile development street cred, illuminated by his uniquely humorous approach to inheritance hierarchies. After a string of number ones on Billboard’s Gangster C# Chart during the 2000s, D.O.R.K. took a break from the industry to focus on other ventures, including needlework and a line of pocket protectors that he designed himself. He’s currently back in the cube building a financial reporting application and living the gangster life.
Editor's Note: The Notorious D.O.R.K. demanded full creative control over his bio.

This webinar will demonstrate how development organizations can inject exception tracking into traditional, cloud, mobile and modern apps, resulting in the automatic creation of work items inside Team Foundation Server. Development organizations consume production usage and event data differently than their operations counterparts; development must filter, prioritize and incorporate production incidents into sprints and backlogs efficiently without slipping into an interrupt-driven development practice.
