Tips, Tools, and Lessons Learned Building a .NET CMS
Tuesday, January 15, 2013 6:30 PM, Washington, DC
View Tips, Tools, and Lessons Learned Building a .NET CMS on Bing Maps An effective content management system must enable a content editor to quickly and easily manage the information on their site. It must also allow a developer to efficiently add new features to the site, including robust admin tools. In this session, the speaker will demonstrate Lighthouse.NET, an ASP.NET MVC content management system developed by his firm over the course of several years and recently ported to ASP.NET MVC. Along the way, he will highlight his experience with the following techniques and technologies:
• Facebook login integration – How we utilized Facebook's Client-Side JavaScript SDK and Social Graph API to incorporate “Login with Facebook” functionality into Lighthouse.NET.
• Leveraging SignalR for enhanced debugging – SignalR is a powerful library allowing server-side code to push content to the browser using WebSockets. Lighthouse.NET uses SignalR to enable developers to display all queries run through the system in a separate Debug Panel. This is very helpful during development.
• Security – Handling authentication, especially related to cookies and sites served over SSL.
• Working with NuGet - NuGet is a Visual Studio extension that makes it easy to add, remove, and update libraries and tools in Visual Studio projects. When changes are made to the core of Lighthouse.NET (which consists of .cs code files, .cshtml views, as well as JavaScript, CSS, and image assets), we create a new NuGet package from the core project. This package can be imported into a CMS project that leverages Lighthouse.NET.
About the Speaker
Adam Polon is a principal at Modern Signal, a full service web design and development firm based in Washington, DC. Adam has fourteen years of experience managing and programming large-scale web development projects of varying lengths. Clients have included Thompson Corporation, General Electric, Whole Foods, Schlumberger and The Pew Charitable Trusts
